1997 Ford F350 - Step-By-Step Axle Repair
A new coat of RTV was applied... A new coat of RTV was applied evenly to the differential cover as well as all differential bolts as we put the cover back on. We then called it a day and let the differential sealant dry overnight. | The next day, we took advantage... The next day, we took advantage of having the hub and rotor assembly off and regreased the bearings and replaced our wheel seals (PN 415960). In addition, we were also able to give the brakes a good cleaning. | With the hub and rotor assemblies... With the hub and rotor assemblies back on, we needed to set the bearing pre-load. First, we torqued the inner bearing adjusting nut to 50 ft-lb while spinning the wheel hub back and forth to seat the bearings. Then we backed off the adjusting nut 1/4 of a turn, installed the lock-ring, then the outer adjusting nut, and torqued the outer nut to 180 ft-lb (Ford recommends 160-205 ft-lb). | We then put the brake pads... We then put the brake pads and calipers back on, installed the manual-locking hubs, the wheels and tires, and filled the differential with 5.8 pints of 80W-90 Lucas gear oil. We then locked the hubs in and took the truck for a test drive, which proved that our install was a success. | | |
