7.3L Ford F-250 Super Duty Power Stroke - Powering Up with Propane

The intake piece, complete with the mounted propane regulator (arrow), was clamped on in front of the turbo inlet.

A pressure switch (arrow) was wired in to activate the system only under a preset amount of boost. This switch can be adjusted to activate at a higher boost level for increased safety or a lower boost level if propane is being used for light load conditions like highway towing.

The pressure switch was then wired in along with an arming switch that will send power to the pressure switch. As long as the arming switch is in the off position, the propane won't come on.

The arming switch was then mounted in place somewhere convenient for the driver to use. A red warning light was also wired in to let the driver know when the propane system has been activated.

To ensure the liquid propane has been changed completely to a gaseous form by the time it hits the engine, coolant is employed to increase the temperature through the regulator; the engine coolant must be drained, and the cooling system must be modified because of this procedure.

In this application, the stock hose going into the water pump was rerouted to the propane regulator.

A custom hose was routed back to the water-pump inlet from the regulator. This hose will be hot, and it's a good idea to have some type of insulation so it doesn't harm any other engine components.

Although the owner of this Ford opted to have a small tank mounted under the bed to save space, a more common location is the bed of the truck, as shown on STC's shop truck. With a tank this large, you'll only need to fill up on propane once every few months, even if you use it quite often. The hose from the tank was routed up under the cab into the engine bay and then connected to the regulator.

With the kit installed, you're ready to go out and enjoy an extra boost of performance and get better fuel mileage.
