Picture this: you've installed a new programmer that adds 150-plus horsepower and more than 200 lb-ft of torque to your 7.3L Power Stroke. The only problem is, your E40D-4R100 automatic transmission is having trouble dealing with all the extra juice surging through the drivetrain. Luckily, many new programmers will read diagnostic trouble codes (DTC) caused by an ailing transmission.
Pat Barrett of Level 10 Power has been working with Fords since 1973, including a super-strong transmission build for a powerful twin-turbo Expedition that was sold only in Africa and the Middle East. He's compiled this chart full of trouble codes along with the affected components, a description of the problem, the symptoms it will cause, and the action you need to take to fix it. So if you're already getting a transmission trouble code, take a look at the chart. If you're not, read the chart anyway so you're ready when trouble arises. Put this issue in a safe place so you can reference it when your Power Stroke gets too powerful for your slush box.
| five-digit dtc | component | description | condition | symptom | action |
p0102, p0103, p1100, p1101 | mass airflow sensor (maf) | maf concerns | maf system has a malfunction that may cause a transmission concern. | high or low electronic pressure control (epc), incorrect shift schedule. Incorrect torque-converter clutch-engagement scheduling. Symptoms similar to a tp failure. | wiring or map sensor |
| p0117 | engine coolant temperature sensor (ect) | ect indicates 257°f | voltage drop across ect exceeds scale set for temperature 257°f (grounded). | torque-converter clutch will always be off, resulting in reduced fuel economy. | wiring or ect sensor |
| p0118 | ect | ect indicates -40°f | voltage drop across ect exceeds scale set for temperature -40°f (open circuit). | torque-converter clutch will always be off, resulting in reduced fuel economy. | wiring or ect sensor |
p0122, p0123, p1120 | throttle position sensor (tp) | tp concern | pcm has detected an error that may cause a transmission concern.` | harsh engagements, firm shift feel, abnormal shift schedule, torque-converter clutch does not engage, torque-converter clutch cycling. ` | wiring or tp sensor |
