"Budget" 12-Valve?
You May Have Noticed That We Dropped The "Budget" Title to our 12-valve buildup. Why? Well, after we had everything added up, we realized that our truck was hardly a cheap proposition. Don't believe us? Here's the cost breakdown:
| S&B Intake: | $230 |
| BD Transmission, Pressure-Loc, and HD pan: | $3,295 |
| Converter: | $1,250 |
| Flexplate: | $425 |
| 40hp Injectors: | $500 |
| High Flow delivery valves: | $700 |
| Fuel Plate: | $225 |
| 3,200-RPM governor spring kit: | $170 |
| Exhaust Manifold: | $485 |
| X-Flow Intake Elbow: | $379 |
| Super B turbo and downpipe: | $1,335 |
| HD Clamp kit: | $235 |
| BD Cool-IT Intercooler: | $1,380 |
| Total: | $10,609 |
Our Project 12-Valve fueling modifications gave us about 100 horsepower over stock, but made our truck smoke a whole lot more. Our exhaust gas temperatures also went from a stock 1,100 degrees F to about 1,500 degrees F. Despite this, we still wished we'd taken the fuel plate out of the truck or slid it all the way forward to achieve better numbers, even if it was just for a couple of quick dyno pulls. | The BD Super B turbo spooled extremely quick, but was still pretty mild for our application. More power can be had with a larger turbo, but in most cases it is at the expense of good response. | Our truck never really had much of an EGT problem, but with our non-intercooled truck we now realize how quick those gauges can really move. Project 12-Valve could be driven at any speed or throttle position on the street, yet still never get above 1,400 degrees in its final form. |
We did take a trip down the eighth-mile to see how it would do. The grey and blue dualie ran a 10.0 at 69 mph in the eighth, which roughly equates to a mid 15-second quarter-mile pass. Not lightning quick, but at least it was faster than the stock '08 trucks we've tested. | | |
