Cummins ISV5.0: V8 Diesel Engine

Clean, Quiet and Fuel Efficient

Text By , Photography by

Diesel Power was on-hand this week in Columbus, Indiana, as Cummins announced their state-of-the-art powerhouse, the ISV5.0 V8 5-liter diesel engine. Packed full with all of the latest Cummins technology, this fuel efficient engine is suited for pickup and delivery vehicles, school buses, light- and medium-duty trucks and motorhomes. It has great midrange and drivability, and reportedly has little lag. Cummins combustion technology contributes to its cleanness and efficiency. This engine will be manufactured at the Columbus Engine Plant, starting during the fourth quarter of 2014. Check out some of the engine’s highlights below, and stay tuned for a full write-up in an upcoming issue!

Highlights:

-Easily fits where a comparable V8 or V10 gasoline engine was housed, while also offering multiple front-end accessory drive options.

-Compacted graphite iron (CGI) block for higher strength and reduced weight.

-High-strength aluminum alloy head and composite valve covers.

-Dual overhead camshafts for improved engine performance.

-Forged steel crankshaft.

-Cummins Turbo Technologies VGT Turbocharger features precision boost control for performance and fuel economy.

-Advanced ceramic glow plugs reduce startup time and last the life of the engine.

-Bosch HPCR (High Pressure Common Rail) fuel system with higher injection pressures and Piezo fuel injectors aid optimal combustion for improved fuel economy and reduced emissions.

-Aftertreatment System from Cummins Emission Solutions that delivers near-zero emissions through use of a Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) and Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR); also utilizes cooled Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR).

-Horsepower/Torque: 200-275 hp / 520-560 lb.-ft.

Iam really impressed with the newely invented Cummins ISV 5.0 V8. Did you guys notice the EGR? go  go  Rocky  Mount. This is closely following what Cummins power Generation is doing in KENT and elsewhere. Wellcome to TEKNOPOWER LTD.  in Mogadishu -Somalia.  Kudos!

Sweet engine. Don't know how all the cummins 6.0 VGT hater's feel about that turbo. The hp and torque level are stellar considering the displacement. I mean those were the power levels of the big boys 10 years ago.

Since 89 ford has had 6 completely different engines. They all sucked. Dodge had 2. We just change the ecm and injection pumps. Ford only natural environment is a mechanics shop. I'd rather be cummin than strokin anyway.

Ford only wishes they had a engine as that would last as long as the might cummins .

Oh Sven. Ford wants to make more power they have to design a new engine. Cummins wants to make more power, just put a different calibration in the ECM.

@Bryan Shaw They can. All that have to do is dump their "want-a -be" diesel and use the cummins engine. Problem solved.

@Edmond Pery Fernandez Everybody knows that except Nissan & Toyota who just want to say they have a truck line. Neither one of them(Nissan & Toyota)are really serious about staying competitive or can stay competitive with Ford, GMC & Dodge or they would have a diesel as an option.

@Sven StrahlNissan would rather throw away money on a things like the Juke/GTR or the Murano CrossCabriolet or the Leaf for that matter.
