Diesel Nissan Titan: Cummins 5.0L V8 Turbo Diesel Engine

Half Ton Diesel

Text By , Photography by courtesy of Nissan,

Nissan teased us with announcements that the next-generation Titan would have more powertrain options, and now we’re seeing it come to fruition. A partnership between Cummins and Nissan has resulted in the optimization of a Cummins 5.0L V8 turbo diesel engine to be offered in the next-generation full-size Nissan Titan pickup. While we don’t know much about towing capacity and mileage yet, we do know that torque rating will be in the mid-500s (lb.ft.) with more than 300 horsepower. We were on-site for this announcement, which came this morning at the Nissan 360 event in Irvine, California. The Cummins 5.0L V8 will be built at the Columbus Engine Plant at the Cummins headquarters in Columbus, Ind. The next-generation Titan will be built at Nissan’s Canton, Miss. vehicle assembly plant.

Reports Fred Diaz, divisional vice president, Nissan Sales & Marketing, Service & Parts, Nissan North America: “There is no question that the new Titan will turn heads, and with the available Cummins 5.0L V8 Turbo Diesel, we expect to win new fans and attract buyers looking for this unique configuration.”

No launch dates have been announced at this point, but Cummins-powered prototype trucks are undergoing extensive durability testing and highway performance testing.

dodge sells trucks because of the engine the trucks are literally garbage, nissan makes better vehicles/trucks then doge BY FAR !!! the only laking they had was their shitty fuel millage if this fixes that it will be unstoppable. this is going to be the sexyest truck. i do plan on buying one and yes it will have pink camo accents !

If the mileage can be decent enough to exceed the normal V8 and V6  market enough to offset the increase the price of diesel fuel, it will be a winner.

Gentleman welcome to the new era ALL AMERICAN TRUCK BUILT in Canton, Miss USA and  using Built in Columbus, IN USA Old faithful CUMMINS Engine. I'll be a proud owner of this fine truck. Best of all it's a reliable Nissan Titan. Dodge the only thing made in america is the Cummins engine, everything else is practically import. I was going on my way to get the 5.9 when I heard this future release.

Are those torque and HP ratings pre-EPA emission requirements?  It will be interesting to see how the truck sells in today's truck market.  The MPG is another factor that I am curious to see.

Frankly, I am not sure what to think.  For Cummins sake, I hope it is a success.  Not impressed with small trucks.

Sounds like dodge screwed up not put the v8 cummins in their 1/2 ton. But think of of it this way Titans will become the next engine donors once the truck is fucked.

Cummins is not and never has been German. The only Cummins facilities in Germany is Alternator facilities.

Some of these comments are just ridiculous. First of all Cummins is a global Engine and components company not Chrysler exclusive. Second Chrysler chose to stay in house with the 1500 and use a very dependable Fiat engine that has had good history in Europe. Third the Titan is built in America and designed in America, Dodge can't even say that. And someone brought up the whole Japanese thing, Duramax is designed by Isuzu. I am very excited to see another Cummins diesel in a regular consumer vehicle, I don't care which company is making the platform. The US needs more diesel cars and trucks.

hopefully also the power steering pump is not running off the timing gears like all those inlines that I wouldnt run if I had to that cost me an engine because I tried to drive home with a bad pump

Can't wait to get one, can't wait to throw more boost and fuel at one.

There was a recent cars.com article put Toyota and then Nissan as the biggest providers of jobs and economical benefits to America. Over Ford and GM by a considerable margin. Don't forget that Cummins is going to be put together in a Southern Indianna plant. This truck is more American than the mustang!

Looks like your rumor mill article was right. Can't wait to get one!

Titan is a joke. The engine will be worth more than the truck as soon as someone is crazy enough to sign on the dotted line.

Now its going to be a v8? instead of a 4 cyl? Sweet.

All of u bashing Nissan for putting a cummins in your just mad bc you didn't think of it !!!! And who cares honestly if its a good truck it's a good truck !!!!

And plus, more then likely it's gonna run def (diesel exhaust fluid) I would just rather stick with a gas motor.

What are you gonna do with only 500ft pounds of torque? Tow your 20ft ski boat to the lake? People by diesel for heavy hauling. It will have power to tow your boat but not enough to tow a nice size fifth wheel comfortable.

I thought dodge put a four cyclinder Diesel engine in the half ton trucks called the Eco Diesel engine.

Bryan Hummel

Ya cummins probaly pissed off that dodge put a V6 diesel in there 1/2 tons that wasnt a cummins eh?!

Daniel Girald

@Cody Simoncelli but this v8 is actually not so impressive when compared to the overseas isf3.8 4-pot, which is more suitable to the titan than the 2.8 which was previously quoted (and would be actually a good powerplant for the frontier)

Daniel Girald
Daniel Girald

a 4-cylinder cummins would actually make more sense than that light euro v6 in a truck, mostly due to the parts interchangeability with the 6-cylinder and the real heavy-duty design... it's quite odd to see a full-size featuring a dohc valvetrain...
