Don’t you wish you could get back all that energy you wasted grinding up brake pads?

If your common sense tells you something just isn’t quite right, the first thing you need to do is identify the problem, right? Here are eight things holding all diesel engines back from their full potential. After you’ve read this, be sure to turn to page 142, where we’ll show you eight companies determined to change these pesky hang-ups into internal-combustion success stories.

Energy Losses
Today’s best diesel engines have a brake thermal efficiency of about 42 percent. This means they waste more energy from their fuel than they turn into actual work. The radiator, charge-air cooler, and EGR cooler throw away nearly 28 percent of the potential energy in our diesel fuel. This is done in order to keep the cylinder temperature regulated for the compression stroke—but it’s still a waste of energy.

Exhaust Gas Losses
The other place a quarter of the fuel’s potential energy is escaping is out the exhaust pipe—even with a turbocharger that helps mitigate the losses. In today’s diesel engines, the compression ratios are fixed. What this means is that our engines have more cylinder pressure than we can harness. Modern engines open the exhaust valves early (before all the power is transferred into work on the piston) because otherwise it would send the pistons a foot into the ground.

Fuel Inflexibility
Today, we have biodiesel-, ethanol-, JP-8-, CNG-, ULSD-, propane-, and LPG-specific engines. Since our prime movers are sensitive to fuel type, their hardware must be tuned to each energy source. Future engine designs need to be fuel independent, which means they won’t be so picky regarding what they burn and convert to work.

Emissions Problems
Mainstream scientists believe excessive carbon in the atmosphere is (and will continue to) causing changes to our oceans and atmosphere. Mainstream doctors say asthma and heart problems can be attributed to today’s internal-combustion engines. What you choose to believe is up to you, but rest assured that our society will continue to strive to clean up the environment we live in—and that’s a good thing.

We now have test engines in labs that produce fewer emissions than boiling a pot of water. These engines produce an exhaust that is cleaner than the air in some of today’s cities. We all like clean air, but we don’t like today’s expensive and failure-prone aftertreatment systems. The goal is taking care of the combustion and emissions in the cylinder, instead of passing the buck to filters, sprayers, and eventually to our lungs.

No Power Storage
Don’t you wish you could get back all that energy you wasted grinding up brake pads? You’ll also be keeping the dust off people and things next to roadways, while improving your vehicle’s fuel economy at the same time. Compressed air tanks, hydraulic accumulators, and compressed springs should all be considered.

Low Power Density
The diesel engine has a serious weight problem. Anyone who has ever pulled an engine can vouch for this. A better balanced engine—one that does not need as robust a block to deal with the random forces—is key. Materials such as ceramic, ultra-high-strength steels, aluminum, and magnesium can help shed the pounds.

Head Gasket Failures
Are you sick of replacing head gaskets? Future engines will get away from having this vulnerable connection point right at the hottest and most pressurized section of the engine.

We Need at Least Two Engines Per Vehicle
The diesel engine combustion system that sits between your framerails was not originally built for a pickup. Instead, our combustion process was intended for stationary power generation, ships, submarines, airplanes, tractors, and other devices, like irrigation pumps, which run at a steady speed. If you look at a vehicle’s normal drive cycle, you’ll notice it looks like the Rocky Mountains: up and down, up and down. A vehicle idling in heavy traffic exaggerates this fact even more. We need at least two engines—a big one and a small one—to better match the peaks and valleys. The small one should be able to capture the big one’s waste heat or run on its own with a separate combustor. This way, a small, clean-burning engine could be used for the vehicle’s onboard power needs. These include electrical accessories, heating, A/C, power steering, brake booster, and a small hydraulic pump for creeping and short trips. The small engine will start the big one and warm it up so it’ll create fewer emissions and create a cozy cab instantly in the winter.

I am a huge fan of Improving the Diesel engine and i think that there is nothing but great improvements in the future of Diesel technology but have issues with the idea that Government regulations are going to send us down the right path. It seems to me that the only think government regulations have really accomplished is the burning of more fuel.

Current engines use the vintage 4-cycle (2-cycle in niches such as ships). It has the following primordial flaws that hurt diesel more than gasoline ones. It has:

1) half of the cylinders working. Making all the cylinders driving can reduce cost and improve efficiency.

2) sweet-spot efficiency (42%) far above the normal drive cycle – further reducing the efficiency. Adapting engine’s sweet-spot to the drive cycle can materially increase mpg.

3) identical stroke displacements and durations for different thermodynamic functions. Optimizing the stroke combinations during the drive cycle can further improve the mpg and performance.  

Out-of-the-box solutions can be simple and cheap. One is a 2-piesce piston that splits crown part from skirt to operate as 4-cycle (by a separate mechanism), while the skirt part operates as 2-cycle (via con-rod). It’s a hybrid of 4-/2-cycles and better.

Before Mr. Diesel came along people believed 3% efficiency was good enough for internal combustion engines. He said his engine would achieve 73% thermal efficiency. In the end he was only able to achieve something less than 20%. Imagine if today someone could give us something 5 times better than what we have now. For me nothing is ever good enough...I don't want to settle because that would make for a super boring magazine. Today's Headline, "Everything is Perfect the Way it Is" or "Let's Settle for Mediocre". Truth is without emission standards we wouldn't have digital fuel injection, VGT turbos, or six-speed transmissions. The regulations is what's driving the technology. It's painful right now but it'll be worth it later on.

Every single thing that you have listed here are issues that have already been solved.  It's the companies that won't introduce these technologies in mass to the public that are the problem.

And how can you list these things as failures?  42% thermal efficiency is not that bad.  There are diesels more efficient than that.  And even still, the most ANY gasoline powered engine gets is up to 30%.  Without all the failed emissions efforts that have been made, diesels would be even above that number.  Chrysler is actually working on this presently.

And please don't say that we need 2 engines.  That is a terrible idea that has never ended well.  No matter how you do it you get increased weight and decreased overall efficiency.  What you need to be thinking is smaller or multi displacement such that pumping losses aren't big when just cruising.  You could build a 500 hp reliable 4 liter diesel with out too much difficulty, but nobody will.  You might have noted that the 3.9 Cummins is quite efficient too.
