Rumor of the Moment:
The VW Up! will get a diesel-hybrid like what is found in the XL1 concept.
VW XL1 SEV
A new concept has arrived from Volkswagen: the XL1 Super Efficient Vehicle. What’s with the super-efficient part? Oh, just 313 mpg. There’s an 800cc two-cylinder TDI engine mated to an electric motor and a seven-speed tranny. And the car weighs only 1,750 pounds. Yeah, you’re probably wanting to ask about its looks.
If it seems a bit familiar, it’s because it ispedigree includes the L1 concept from about two years ago as well as the 1-liter car from 2002. Staggered seating, carbon-fiber reinforced polymer parts, scissor doors, a wind-tunnel-friendly body shape, and lightweight materials throughout, such as magnesium wheels and an aluminum steering system, are other notables. In fact, only 23 percent of the XL1 is made from steel or iron.
Land Rover Range_E
Don’t be fooled by the e in the name of Land Rover’s new prototype. Yes, the e stands for electric, but this concept SUV is also meant to demonstrate technology Land Rover is developing at its engineering center in the United Kingdom. The Range_e uses the Range Rover Sport as its foundation and is powered byscore!a 3.0L V-6 diesel. Rover’s plug-in parallel diesel-hybrid system features an eight-speed automatic transmission. The four-by has an EV range of 20 miles, and a full range of 690 miles.
EPA Rates the Mahindra
The diesel pickup we’ve been waiting for longer than Guffman has been given its fuel economy numbers by the EPAand they’re not as good as we expected. The 2.2L diesel-equipped, auto-tranny ’11 Mahindra TR40 4x4 has been rated at only 19 mpg city and 21 mpg highway.
It Costs How Much?
Guess how much you’re going to likely spend over the course of your life on auto insurance. No, higher. Higher. OK, geez, lower. Insurance.com punched the calculator after analyzing insurance quotes in its database and learned that the average is $84,388. This is basically speaking on behalf of those who first bought insurance at 21, married at 27, briefly insured teens, and stopped driving at 75.
Italian Diesel for the Grand Cherokee
A new 182ci 3.0L VM Motori V-6 with Fiat’s MultiJet II technology is now available in the ’11 Jeep Grand Cherokee in Europe and other markets that love them a diesel engine. It makes 241 hp and 406 lb-ft of torque (that’s 10 percent more ponies and 8 percent more torque than the outgoing diesel). The 507-pound, 60-degree engine utilizes such goods as a compacted-graphite iron (CGI) block, aluminum cylinder heads, two-piece aluminum oil pan, cast-iron exhaust manifolds, cast-aluminum pistons, and a Garrett VGT turbocharger. It has a 16.5:1 compression ratio (previously 18.1:1) and a 3.27-inch x 3.62-inch bore and stroke. "We have two clear messages we would like millions of Americans watching the Super Bowl to know about BMW. Even in the depths of the recession, BMW continued to invest in America, and as the global benchmark for clean diesel technology, we’re challenging stereotypes to show our advanced diesels are part of the future."
-Dan Creed, Vice President, Marketing, BMW of North America, regarding the company’s two Super Bowl commercials; the messages are going to continue to appear in BMW marketing throughout this year
Who’s Buying What
Last year, it turned out that 8 of the top 10 vehicles sold on the East and West Coasts were foreign cars; only the Ford F-Series and Chevy Silverado made the cut. Truecar.com noticed that in the Midwest, 7 of the top 10 best-sellers were domestic, while 5 of the top 10 in Texas were large trucks (the Ford, Chevy, and Dodge Ram, of course, in First, Second, and Third Place). In California, the F-Series ranked Sixth, while the Silverado was in 10th Place. P.S. The VW Jetta ranked Ninth.
In Illinois, the Silverado was Fourth, while the F-Series was numero uno, but for New Yorkers, the Silverado came in at the Ninth spot, the F-Series at 10th.
Caterpillar’s Long-Lost Pickup Truck Engine?
At this year’s Miami Boat Show, Caterpillar Marine Power Systems debuted its new Cat C6.4 V-8 marine engine. The 3,400-rpm powerplant features common-rail piezo injection and a compacted-graphite iron block. In seagoing trim, the single-turbo 6.4L engine will make 335 to 505 hp. Production is slated to begin at the Marine Power Center (located in Wimborne, United Kingdom) in early 2012.
But when we saw this engine, our first thought was This is the Caterpillar engine diesel pickup owners have been dreaming of. There’s no word of offering the C6.4 engine in an on-highway package, but if that were to ever happen, we’d bet this is/was/could be Cat’s heavy-duty pickup engine.
Rumor of the Moment:
Only the Ram will get to have the crosshair grille famous to Dodge vehicles. Dodge grilles will get a new look now that Ram and Dodge are separate entities.
- The Toyota Land Cruiser is now 60.

- Continental Tire did a study. The study found that those who play driving games with regularity are poorer drivers. Use that info as needed.
- The question: How much do you trust the following industries to do what is right? Why it was asked: The 11th annual Edelman Trust Barometer. The results: Automotive (69 percent) is the most trusted industry behind technology (81 percent), which ranked First. Insurance, banks, and financial services ranked lowest.
- Looks like the Diesel Emissions Reduction Act has an emphasis on reduction right nowas in, a reduction in funding. It has been cut entirely from Obama’s 2012 budget proposal.
