The Fiesta is Britain's most popular small hatchback; the current (fifth generation) brings the addition of a diesel-powered tdci S model that will no doubt keep the ball rolling. Several platform trim levels are available and include the RS and Zetec-S gasoline versions.
Utilizing the three-door Fiesta body structure, the S-trim features the same roof spoiler and deep front and rear bumper moldings as the ST. Sport seats, along with ultra-low profile 195/45R16 tires on 16-inch alloy wheels, work in harmony with a sport-tuned suspension.
The European Fiesta is offered with three transmission choices: a standard five-speed manual, the Durashift automatic (shown), and Ford's EST transmission, which changes from fully automatic mode to a clutchless manual.
The original diesel 1.4L tdci Duratorq mill develops 67 horsepower and is considered by many to be a basic people mover. This diesel mill has its roots in France, where it is also utilized in some Peugeot platforms. The 1.4L will deliver a measured 53.3 mpg in the city, along with a full 76.3 mpg on the highway. Expect 0-60 times in the 15-second range, with a maximum top end of 101 mph.
1.6L ALL-ALUMINUM COMMON-RAIL POWERPLANT
The surprise, however, is the 1.6L diesel supplied through a co-operative agreement between Ford and PSA Peugeot Citroen. The 1.6L develops 90 horsepower, yet still manages a whopping 62 mpg if one keeps the foot off the accelerator. This second-generation Duratorq 16-valve tdci turbo diesel features commonrail fuel injection, which serves up the torque necessary for freeway speeds.
