International FTTS - Hummer Replacement?

Ironically, International's Future Tactical Truck System (FTTS) has more in common with a Toyota Prius than an H2. This radical vehicle relies more on its three-phase brushless permanent magnet electric motor than its mid-mounted 3.0L MWM turbodiesel. Thanks to electricity, this concept vehicle features a silent mode when stealth is required, and can also power all the necessary military hardware without tugging a separate generator. International literally lived up to its name when it teamed up with various firms worldwide in order to put this vehicle together. For example, the engine was designed by MWM (Brazil), and design/engineering expertise can be credited to Ricardo (U.K.).

The truck's radiators are mounted on the side, which makes for less surface area at the grille (more aerodynamic). It also reduces this prototype's frontal heat image.

The FTTS has four-wheel drive and four-wheel steering. Since power comes from behind the cab, the front and rear suspension have more room to work (141/2 inches of travel). Another advantage to this setup is that the 3.0L produces 220 hp and 335 lb-ft of torque, and can be replaced if needed in 30 minutes.

With a pickup-like structure, only the cab needs armor, so you get a lighter vehicle, which translates into better fuel economy. This is important since by some estimates fuel is $600 per gallon when filling up on the battlefield.

Two goals for the FTTS program include:
1. Vehicle will get 30 mpg. This vehicle currently gets 7.5 mpg.
2. Vehicle will include onboard diagnostic equipment to monitor the diesel engine and hybrid drive system.

The International FTTS concept is known as a strong parallel hybrid. In this instance, strong means it relies more on electricity than internal combustion. Parallel means both power sources are mechanically connected to the wheels.	Who would have thought that a 3.0L MWM turbodiesel with four valves per cylinder and common-rail injection could motivate 13,700 pounds?
