With a name like Swamp Thing, we pretty much expected Paul Sundy's orange Ford truck to be able to crawl through anything. What we didn't expect, is that Swamp thing is actually not a truck, it's a combination of three trucks. It features a '91 Ford Bronco body that's lost its top and has been narrowed a whopping 12 inches. Ditching the tailgate, windshield (it's Lexan), and a quarter of the body saved a whopping 800 pounds. A lighter-weight mud truck is easier on parts and doesn't need as much torque to crawl through the gooey stuff.
Our next surprise was the chassis. Stock Ford? Nope, it's actually an International tow truck chassis from the late '40s. With a frame and body, next was power. What kind of engine has almost unlimited torque and can run in the mud all day? Why, a diesel of course. The engine that powers Swamp Thing is a 5.9L Cummins that was sourced out of an '89 Dodge truck. Aside from a little fuel screw turning on the VE injection pump, a new air filter, and a hood stack, the engine is pretty much stock, and makes roughly 200 hp and 400 lb-ft of torque. While that doesn't sound like much, it's only part of the equation.
