Suspension modifications were important to keep the truck riding smooth over rough terrain, and for that purpose, ORU used Atlas suspension leaf springs for an 8-inch lift. An adjustable trackbar kit was added to the truck with custom bracketry. Off Road Unlimited also built new shock towers for the front end and added a pair of Bilstein 5150 fixed remote reservoir shocks to each corner. A hydraulic assist crossover steering conversion from ORU helps the guidance of the truck, and a long-travel front driveshaft from General Driveshafts keeps everything turning.
Off Road Unlimited upgraded the brakes by thermally treating the rotors and adding a set of high-torque pads. The truck also received stainless steel braided brake lines. With 4.10 gears and an ARB locking differential, Tom has no worries about getting stuck in the rough conditions of the Baja wilderness. The rear suspension uses ORU traction bars with Atlas 8-inch leaf springs. A single Bilstein 5150 shock controls each rear corner. An ORU overload air spring system compensates for heavy loads using an Oasis compressor.
A Transfer-Flow mid-ship replacement tank holds 46 gallons of diesel fuel, and that comes in real handy on those long stretches south of the border when it's hard to find fuel. While some of the parts, like the spare tire holder in the bed, were custom-built for this truck, other parts were simply pulled off the shelf and bolted on. The Defender Series bumper guard and roof rack fall in the latter category. Both of these parts serve as useful places to mount a whole bunch of lights. A total of eight Hellas and two PIAAs light up the dark night like you wouldn't believe.
Tom can do nothing but praise his truck and the work that Off Road Unlimited did to it. "It handles unbelievable and corners really well," Tom told us. "Sometimes, I think it rides as good as a sports car." No wonder Tom drives this truck every day.
