Jeff Garmon, of Garmon's Diesel Performance in Griffin, Georgia, has been known to build some interesting trucks--from a drag truck with a Craftsman Truck Series body on it way back in 2003, to his latest creation, this '07 Dodge Ram. Jeff built a pair of third-generation -ton Dodges for himself and the late Joe Webb back in 2005, but neither of those trucks were nearly as wild as his latest creation, a compound-turbo, 700-horsepower monster. The Ram started life as a meager V-6 gas-powered manual transmission model and has since been transformed into what is quite possibly the baddest shop truck we've ever seen.
First, Jeff and his co-worker Rick Gilbert had to yank the anemic V-6 in favor of a 12-valve Cummins powerplant. Jeff then lowered the compression, added Extrude-Honed injectors, compound turbos from High Tech Turbo and used a 160hp P7100 pump to provide the fuel. Many think the 160hp P-pump is a bad choice for making big horsepower, but Jeff disagrees. The pump can move enough fuel to make good power, it's just not the pump you want if you are trying to turn big rpm. Jeff doesn't need big rpm--his dyno sheet shows 178 mph at less than 4,000 rpm. Speaking of dynos, the truck has made an incredible 702 hp at the rear wheels and does so with a mere haze out the tailpipe. The manual transmission was replaced with a custom Competition Plus Series 47RH built by Garmon's Diesel. The interior on the truck is mostly stock, with the addition of some Autometer gauges, custom dash inserts, and a B&M shifter that Jeff modified to appear as though it is floating in mid air. The exhaust is a one-off custom 5-inch system by Exotic Exhaust that has a two-piece downpipe.
The most surprising thing about this truck is the amount of factory parts used. It has stock head bolts, a stock exhaust manifold, rearend and still has the V-6 ECM. Jeff added SRT-10 front end accents along with custom burgundy ghost flames by Show and Pro Collision. Jeff's creation rolls around on 22-inch Akuza Alloy wheels wrapped with Kumho rubber. The truck has made a few traction-limited passes at diesel drag racing events, and while it couldn't hook enough to produce a quick elapsed time, 125-mph trap speeds indicate plenty of power is there. One of Jeff's customers, David Elrod, described a ride with Jeff in the shop truck like this: "Riding in Jeff's truck is like none other. Fifty-five-mph roll-ons will light the rear tires on fire for several hundred yards. Jeff tossed me the keys and said: `Take it out by yourself and see what you think.' I can honestly say it's the first time in my life that I've been afraid to use all the power that a vehicle had!"

While the engine doesn't look flashy like the rest of the truck, it sure makes power. With Jeff's master tuning, the mighty compound-turbo 12-valve makes more than 700 horsepower at the wheels. |
