1985 GMC K-15: Shortbed Cummins Conversion

4BT-Powered '85 GMC K-15

Text By Jason Thompson, Photography by

Alex Wise bought this '85 GMC K-15 pickup brand-new off the sales lot more than 25 years ago. The truck originally had a naturally aspirated 5.0L V-8 gasoline engine, but that recently got replaced with a 3.9L Cummins inline-four turbodiesel engine. Alex loves his swapped-in 4BT Cummins. The rust-free GMC now gets better fuel economy, has more power, and attracts all kinds of attention at the car and truck shows it attends.

How Does He Make It Look So Easy?
Alex is a fabricator at his family-owned business, ABM Fabrication & Machining in Arvada, Colorado, so he is in a unique position to have one incredible custom-built truck. His craftsmanship, attention to detail, and fabrication skills used in his day job transfer effortlessly to his hobby. Plus, when you've owned a truck like this since it was new-you have a lot of time to save your money and plan your upgrades!
