Other than the fiberglass bed, the rear end is pretty basic. Buck finally managed to break the rear Gov-Loc differential at Bowling Green, but has since rebuilt the rear AAM 11 1/2-inch axle with 3.73 gears and a new carrier. The suspension uses factory leaf springs with the overload leaves clamped to the main pack up front and a set of Rancho RS 9000 shocks set to the firmest position. Check out the hidden propane tank and kill switch for the rear bed-mounted battery.

Extra weight just slows him down, so Buck tore out the seats and carpet and put in a rollbar when the truck ran quicker than 11.59 in the quarter-mile. Ditching the factory seats saved 80-100 pounds, but the race stuff isn't nearly as comfortable. Buck pointed out that he could plug the factory electric seats back in with a few bolts, and that the stereo and CD player still work just fine.

For better aerodynamics the sideview mirrors were removed. In their place went these plastic trim pieces that are available through the GM parts counter for dual rear-wheel trucks that have the large Western-style mirrors.

Buck's hometown track is Outer Banks Speedway, in Creswell, North Carolina. It's only an 1/8-mile track, but it's just five miles from his house-so he's spent a good amount of time there. At Beech Bend Raceway (880 miles from his house) we witnessed Buck make his first three passes in the 10s. His best run to date came at Indianapolis Raceway Park where he clicked off a 10.73 at 126.6 mph.
