February 2012 Readers Diesels 1991 Mercedes 300D

Not Your Grandma’s Diesel

Other: Dave says, “Performance products for this engine are nonexistent for the most part. I first turned up the injection pump 20 percent and rebuilt the injectors using Monark tips. Then I removed the EGR and intake airbox system, which included many vacuum solenoids and 2 miles of vacuum lines that control the turbo wastegate, intake air, and EGR. For the outside (since my daughter thought it looked like a grandma’s car), I replaced the wheels and put in projector headlights. On the inside, I installed Auto Meter C2 boost and pyrometer gauges in place of the ashtray. Then I added white to the gauges and installed blue LED lights so everything matches. It makes a fun commuter car.”
