Jetta Sedan and Jetta SportWagenThe turbodiesel Jetta hasn't been available in the U.S. since the '06 model year, but it looks like it's been worth the wait. Unfortunately, the production model will not look quite as good as the white TDI built for SEMA pictured here (the black one is the "real" Jetta), but it will have the common-rail diesel engine that makes 140 hp and 235 lb-ft of torque. That engine option will be available in all 50 states thanks to an emissions system that uses a special catalyst along with a diesel particulate filter-with no need for a urea-spraying exhaust system. It works by using a nitrogen oxide storing catalyst along with engine regeneration periods to reduce NOX emissions by 90 percent. Even with that emissions equipment, VW expects the TDI Jetta to get 30 percent better mileage than the gasoline version. If our math is correct, the 21-mpg city and 29-mpg highway mileage ratings achieved by the gasser is increased to 27 mpg city and up to 38 mpg highway with the diesel engine!
