Purdue University’s Diesel Club Dyno Day

Like-minded individuals have always found a way to come together. All it takes is a few go-getters with good organizational skills, and poof: a club is formed. As agricultural majors at Purdue University, Jason Bannon and Joey Harmeyer took note of all the diesel pickups roaming around campus and began exploring the possibility of forming a diesel enthusiast group. By 2011, the Purdue Diesel Club was officially founded. In just a year’s time, the club has ballooned to nearly 60 members and now hosts an annual dyno day.

For 2012, the folks at DC Chassis Dyno in Brownsburg, Indiana, played host to the event. With names like Fleece Performance and Xtreme Diesel Performance (XDP) sponsoring it, word spread quickly and more than 40 trucks showed up to hit the rollers. While there, we saw 24 trucks crack 500 hp and a dozen competitors eclipse the 600hp mark. High points of the day included a 1,000hp common-rail Dodge and a new fuel-only record for VP44-equipped, second-generation Rams. Follow along as we highlight seven proven power-making recipes on display at the show.

1,029hp Dodge, Korie Nealis
Hometown: Urbana, Indiana
Truck: 2006 Dodge Ram 2500
Engine: 6.7L Cummins with balanced stock crank, Carrillo rods, 6.7L non-emission pistons from Industrial Injection, 5.9L head with Haisley Machine 110-psi valvesprings and push tubes, ARP 625 head studs, Hamilton Cams 188/220 camshaft

Air: Fleece Performance S480 with Steed Speed second-generation exhaust manifold
Transmission: Full-billet-shaft Sun Coast 48RE with larger cooler up front and auxiliary cooler under the truck
Horsepower and Torque: 1,029 hp and 1,816 lb-ft
Notes: With water-methanol thrown into the mix, Korie expects to see more than 1,050 hp on his next trip to the dyno.

VP44 (fuel only) Horsepower Record 931hp Dodge, Johnny Gilbert
Hometown: Middlebury, Indiana
Truck: 2001 Dodge Ram 2500
Engine: 5.9L Cummins, 0.040-inch-over short-block built by Redline Diesel Power with Mahle cast-aluminum pistons; Hamilton Cams 181/210 camshaft; mildly ported, O-ringed 24-valve head; valvesprings; ARP 625 head studs
Fuel: MJ Tool Fab number 3 Monster Pump VP44, custom top-feed injectors
Tuning: Edge Juice with Attitude, custom ECM tuning
Air: Bullseye Power triple-turbo (two S300-based 66/71 chargers over an S300-based 66/74) with BatMoWheel compressor wheels and internal wastegates, TurboSmart blow-off valve, BD Diesel intercooler, Stainless Diesel T3 exhaust manifold
Transmission: HTS 47RE with 48RE hard parts, MJ Tool Fab custom input shaft, one-off single-disc torque converter
Horsepower and Torque: 931 hp and 1,652 lb-ft

Notes: Johnny’s 931hp dyno pull set a new fuel-only record for VP44-equipped ’98½ to ’02 Dodge Rams. His 6,850-pound truck backs up these numbers at the dragstrip, too, with a best quarter-mile of 11.04 seconds at 124.6 mph (and just a 1.8-second 60-foot time). With a good launch (and now that the truck is 300 pounds lighter), look for Johnny’s one-off Ram to click off 10s with ease in the future.

869hp Chevy, Devan Barnes
Hometown: Cloverdale, Indiana

Engine: 6.6L Duramax with Carrillo rods, billet main caps, cut and coated pistons, SoCal Diesel camshaft, valvesprings, pushrods, ARP head studs
Fuel: ATS twin CP3s (stroker CP3 in factory location), 125-percent-over injectors

Air: Fleece Performance billet S475
Transmission: Allison 1000 with Sun Coast GMax 6-pac and 1058 triple-disc torque converter
Horsepower and Torque: 869 hp and 1,433 lb-ft
Notes: Devan’s truck has made more than 900 hp and 1,600 lb-ft in the past. For the summer months, he pulls the top CP3, swaps in a 2.5-inch-inducer turbo, makes a tuning change, and runs the local Work Stock Pulling Class.

774hp Dodge, Shane Overlander

739hp Dodge, Keith Burwinkel
Hometown: Cincinnati, Ohio
Truck: 2007 Dodge Ram 3500
Engine: 5.9L Cummins with ARP head studs, Hamilton Cams valvesprings, and push tubes
Fuel: ATS twin CP3s (Industrial Injection 85-percent pump with stock 6.7L Cummins pump), DDP 200hp injectors, FASS 150-gph
Tuning: EFILive
Air: Engineered Diesel S465, Stainless Diesel T4 exhaust manifold, Spearco intercooler
Transmission: G56 six-speed manual with South Bend 3850 dual-disc clutch
Horsepower and Torque: 739 hp and 1,432 lb-ft
Notes: Surprisingly, Keith’s 739hp number was actually just a baseline figure, as he’s just getting acquainted with EFILive’s tuning software. In the future, he plans to step up in nozzle size and go with a 71mm or 75mm S400. His eventual goal is to transform this Ram into a 900hp daily driver.

655hp Chevy, Justin Lighthill
Hometown: Defiance, Ohio
Truck: 2003 Chevy 2500HD
Engine: 6.6L Duramax with Carrillo rods, ARP main studs, and ARP head studs
Fuel: Industrial Injection 120-percent-over CP3, and 100-percent-over nozzles

Air: Fleece Performance S363 (63/73)
Transmission: Allison 1000 with PPE clutches, Precision Industries torque converter, ATS Co-Pilot
Horsepower and Torque: 655 hp and 1,264 lb-ft
Notes: At just 17 years old, Justin built the LB7 engine and the Allison transmission himself. And not only that, he also tunes the truck. Look for this owner-built Bow Tie to mix it up in Work Stock-type classes throughout Ohio and Indiana.

585hp Ford, Jason Bannon

Notes: After popping his head gaskets twice in the past, Jason decided to O-ring the heads. His 6.0L made the most horsepower of any Ford at the event, and its 1,251 lb-ft of twist was one of the highest overall torque numbers of the day.
