The National Hot Rod Diesel Association (NHRDA) kicked off its season opener with a drag race in Wittmann, Arizona, at Speedworld Dragstrip. With most trucks fresh off the trailer from the off-season, there were a lot of tuning and breakage issues. However, we did get a look at a lot of cool new ideas—in both race and street vehicles. We were also impressed by the number of street trucks in attendance running the 11.90-second bracket class, a testament to the power and reliability of today’s modern diesels. Now, without further ado, we’ll show you the latest and coolest items from the Arizona area. The Dirtymax was in Arizona sporting a new and enormous compound turbo setup (GT55 into a GT45) along with a cool, alien-looking water-to-air intercooler that was capable of dropping temperatures below 100 degrees. Unfortunately, not quite enough bracing was used and the intercooler burst, blowing the truck’s hoodscoop off in the process (lead photo). The Dirtymax was in Arizona sporting a new and enormous compound turbo setup (GT55 into a H&S Performance brought out its show-quality drag truck, complete with a 68RFE transmission. Since the 68RFE is not known for its power-handling capabilities, we were surprised when it held and the truck went on to make a 12.1-second pass at 120 mph.H&S Performance brought out its show-quality drag truck, complete with a 68RFE transmissio CT Performance made the trek from Canada with its new Flo-Pro Exhaust-sponsored tube-chassis drag truck, which made some test passes in Arizona.CT Performance made the trek from Canada with its new Flo-Pro Exhaust-sponsored tube-chass One of the first times we’ve ever seen the BD Diesel Turbine Diverter in action was on the CT Performance drag truck (arrow). The diverter works by directing exhaust flow to one side of a divided housing, which improves spool-up and response. It must have worked, because the Cummins had no problems spooling its monster 80mm turbocharger. One of the first times we’ve ever seen the BD Diesel Turbine Diverter in action was on the With a mild tune-up, the 6.7L Cummins engine in the H&S drag truck makes right around 1,000 hp to the wheels. The twin atmospheric turbochargers flowed a whopping 3,800 cfm—good enough for about 2,500 hp—but we’re not sure if they ever fully lit while the truck was going down track. With a mild tune-up, the 6.7L Cummins engine in the H&S drag truck makes right around 1,00 Zane Koch from Wide Open Performance brought this 9-second 7.3L Power Stroke-powered Lightning out to play in Arizona.
