After hearing about an eighth-mile drag racing event called Diesel Play Day, hosted by Dr. Performance, we made the trek over to Weatherford, Texas, to see what it was all about. When we rolled into town, we were surprised to learn the races had been canceled by track officials (on account of cold weather). Not to worry, the guys at Dr. Performance were willing to improvise, and cordially welcomed everyone who had shown up at the track back to their shop for an impromptu dyno day, or should we say dyno night?
As you can imagine, diesels are a big deal in Texas. About 30 trucks showed up to see what they could do on the rollers. Drag trucks, daily drivers, and even tow vehicles made runs on the dyno. Have you ever been to a dyno event that lasted until 1:30 in the morning? Well, down in the Lone Star State, they do it right, as anyone and everyone who wanted on the dyno was allowed to make a run-even if it took all night. And the best part about it was all the dyno runs were free! Here's a look at some of the late-night action.
1,050HP Common-Rail
The quest for the highest-horsepower, common-rail Cummins has been heating up lately in the diesel world. By the time you read this, the bar has probably been set even higher. On the dyno, this immaculate '06 Dodge, which first put down 815 hp on fuel only, smoked the rollers with a nitrous-assisted 1,049hp run.
Aaron Acker, the owner of the truck, mentioned that the Cummins benefited from Industrial Injection injectors, twin CP3s and twin turbos, a Hamilton Cams camshaft and valvetrain, Smarty tuning, and a helping hand from 5E Diesel Innovations. He also said that a new head and more tuning are in the works as we speak, and he may be looking to break Brown's Diesel's 1,138hp fuel-only record in the future.
