The Scheid dragster with Bo Layne at the wheel made history by recording the first-ever six-second quarter-mile pass in a diesel-powered vehicle.
With a website name like Competition Diesel, you know these guys have to be serious. Tim Turner, the maniac behind Competitiondiesel.com decided that it just wasn't good enough to have a website about diesels-he needed to host a race. So, with the help of the National Association of Diesel Motorsports (NADM), the first annual Competition Diesel Invitational was held May 17th in Steele, Alabama. The main draw was drag racing, although the Hushpower monster truck also showed up to crush some cars. There was a 12.0-Second Index Quick Diesel class, a heads-up Pro Street class, as well as bracket racing and passes by the Scheid dragster and Darren Morrison's tube chassis S-10. Track prep is a common problem in diesel drag racing, and at the Competition Diesel event it was second to none, allowing Darren's truck to make a couple 8-second quarter-mile passes (lifting at 1,000 feet). The Scheid dragster finally got some traction and rocketed to a 6.93 at 193 mph, making it the first diesel ever to run a 6-second quarter-mile. A big congrats to Dan Scheid and Bo Layne (driver) for putting down the big number.

In the other drag racing classes, competition was equally intense. Phil Taylor, who was off the Pro Street radar, put Meacham Evins away in the semifinals with nothing but reaction time and went on to face the TS Performance truck in the finals of Pro Street. Both trucks were neck and neck in the finals when the TS truck blew a turbo, giving Phil the Pro Street win.
In bracket racing, the TS crew put on another good show, running nearly right on their dial-in to take the win. In addition to the drag racing, there was also the first-ever Pro Street Big Wheel race, with Lewis Preston taking the win over 2006 Diesel Power Challenge competitor Danny Elmore.
If you haven't guessed yet by the Big Wheel thing, the guys over at Competitiondiesel.com like to have a fun time, and the track prep also let everyone know that they are serious about putting on a good race.
