Another solid Duramax entered in this year's Diesel Power Challenge is Dustin Mintern's '05 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD. Dustin is bringing a truck to the event much like we would-in proven form. No massive teardown is in store for his 800 hp Duramax, and he doesn't plan on trying out any new, untested performance parts. He's simply building on what has already been working for him so far.
With ample driving experience towing, drag racing and sled pulling, Dustin is the type of well-rounded competitor we like to see, and we know his potent Chevy will provide some tough competition come crunch time. Here's his plan of attack in Bowling Green:
Diesel Power: What changes are you making to the truck?
Dustin Mintern: "Since building the motor I have been slowly adding to the truck and getting it dialed in. I recently replaced the leaking stock intercooler with a BD unit, swapped the over-pressured and leaking injectors for another 100 percent over set."
"I also put some QA1 double adjustable shocks on the front for more control at the track, swapped to a looser converter from Precision Industries, and went back through the transmission to inspect it in preparation for this season. I added driveshaft loops and shatter shields, and I will be rebuilding the turbo just before Diesel Power Challenge as well."
"I already use my truck to tow, race, sled pull and daily drive it so I feel it's a proven all around performer and I don't want to make radical changes just before the event. I have considered going to a bigger turbo or adding nitrous to keep up with the guys that will be running huge twin-turbo setups-but we'll just have to see."
DP: What tires do you plan to use?
DM: "I am still trying to decide on and locate a set of tires. I would like to try a set of Nitto Dune Grapplers, and feel they would do well all-around. Normally I drive and tow on street tires, race on cheater slicks, and sled pull on Interco STS's, so using one set for everything will be new for me."
DP: What is your strategy for each event?
DM: "To push my truck hard enough to be competitive, but not break anything in the process."
DP: What spare parts are you bringing?
DM: "We will be bringing two other trucks. Between the two of them I have all the spare parts I need. Other than that just fluids."
DP: Who are your crew members, does each member have a specific task?
DM: "My wife. She is my co-driver and will be taking notes on the competition. My dad is trying to get off work to come down from Ohio (he's the one that got me into diesels in the first place), and will be an extra mechanic and problem solver. And Chris Niess, who is another racer, mechanic, and the owner of one of the "spare parts" trucks."
